I think the significance of that event is often missed and that it's also a very interesting case in which nature trumped history. Perhaps you're familiar with it, but there's a good account of popular resistance in Mexico in <i>Mexico under Siege: Popular Resistance to Presidential Despotism</i> by Ross Gandy and Donald Hodges.
